About IDA (WZ)

Indian Dairy Association ( West Zone ) is one of the four zonal branches of the Indian Dairy Association with its area of operation spread over the states of Goa, Diu and Daman, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra of Western India. IDA ( WZ ) with its office in Mumbai has a Gujarat State Chapter located at Anand. The states in West Zone produce more than 21% of India’s annual milk production of 100 million tons and provide livelihood to 14.25 million milk producers who rear 24.64 million milch animals.

The states of West Zone are the Torch Bearers of the Dairy Development in India. The Co-operative movement of milk producers started in Gujarat and Maharshtra and the development of ‘Anand Pattern’ of Milk Co-opeartives paved the way for the world’s largest Dairy Development Program, “Operation Flood”. This unique program launched by the National Dairy Development Board at Anand created "A White Revolution – a milk revolution".


The most popular milk and milk product brands Amul, Gokul, Mahananda, Sugam, Sumul, Sagar, Katraj, S.R.Thorat, Govind, Dynamix, Sneh, Uttam, Vikas, Kanhaiyya, and the dairy equipment manufacturers GEA Process Engineering, GOMA, IDMC, KK Cans, Nichrome and Zeuzer Engineering are some of the institutional members of IDA (West Zone).

The institutional members also include the esteemed organizations, National Dairy Development Board, National Co.op. Milk Federation of India, IRMA, BAIF Development Research Foundation, Gujarat Co.op Milk Marketing Federation, Madhya Pradesh Sahakari Dugdh Mahasangh, Maharashtra Rajya Sahakari Dudh Mahasangh Maryadit and many others.

Objectives of IDA

  • To provide opportunities for the dissemination and exchange of knowledge and ideas gained from experiments and experience through meetings, conferences, seminars and for collaboration between persons and/or institutions interested in research & planning and those in production, processing and marketing.
  • To practise and promote a high standard of objectivity, scientific expertise and technical proficiency.
  • To encourage and promote scientific research and development related to dairying.
  • To promote and participate in every way the rational and economic development of dairy science, industry and farming in the country in association with cooperatives, industry, or any other organisation, national or international, having similar aims and objectives.
  • To assume any responsibility or functions when asked to do so, on behalf of Government towards the advancement of dairying.
  • To collaborate with societies, associations, or any other organisation, national or international, having similar aims and to participate in meetings held in India or abroad centered around similar objectives.
  • To promote standards (qualitatively and otherwise) and to foster the growth of the dairy industry in general and for the purpose engage in consultancy activities, set up laboratories and do such like or other things as are necessary for the purpose.

IDA Zones & State Chapters

The IDA's Head Quarter is in Delhi and the zonal branches are in Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi. It has State Chapters at Anand in Gujarat, Thrissur in Kerala and Jaipur in Rajasthan. The zonal bodies and State Chapters too have committees on the line of CEC and have similar functions. The Zonal Bodies/State Chapters are headed by Chairman to function on the lines of the role of the President vis-à-vis CEC. The Zonal bodies/ State Chapters also conduct conference, seminars and workshops at the Zonal and State levels. They also, from time to time, hold All India Dairy Industry Conferences on behalf of the CEC. According to the constitution, the zonal bodies and the State Chapters are independent resource centres. The difference between the CEC and the zonal bodies/State Chapters are that the CEC functions at the national level whereas the zonal bodies and the State Chapters function at the zonal and state levels, respectively.

Established in 1948, Indian Dairy Association (IDA) is the apex body of the dairy industry in India. The members are from the cooperatives, MNCs, corporate bodies, private institutions, educational institutions, government and public sector units. IDA functions very closely with the dairy producers, professionals & planners, scientists & educationists, institutions and organisations associated with the development of dairying in India.

The IDA since has a history of around six decades now, it has had the privilege of being headed by several Presidents and some of them were of national and international fame. The luminaries like Sardar Datar Singh, Dr. K.C. Sen, Dr. Z.R. Kothawalla, Dr. D.N. Khurody,
Dr. V. Kurien, Dr. P. Bhattacharya were the past presidents of the IDA.

IDA has been providing a common forum to knit the dairy fraternity together and thus, over the years, it has emerged as the reigning czarina of information. The Association is managed by an apex policy making body called the Central Executive Committee (CEC). The CEC is headed by President and supported by two Vice-Presidents and 19 Executive Committee Members.

The ongoing CEC is spearheaded under the dynamic leadership of Dr. N.R. Bhasin, IDA has emerged as a platform for assimilation and dissemination of knowledge, as an important tool for policy making in the dairy sector, in India ! Besides, the IDA, in the recent time, has also succeeded to focus itself at the national and international fora.

IDA (West Zone) organizes “Shrandhanjali” to Dr. V. Kurien

IDA (WZ), Mumbai organized “Shrandhanjali”, on 12th September 2012, to pay homage to Dr. V. Kurien, “Father of White Revolution”, “Architect of Operation Flood” and Former President of IDA. Mr. Arie Veldhuizen, Counsellor for Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands, New Delhi, Shri. Subhash Mandge, Chairman, Madhya Pradesh Sahakari Dugdh Mahasangh, Shri. Arun Dongale, Chairman, Kolhapur Zilla Sahakari Dudh Utpadak Sangh, “Gokul”, Shri. Ramchandra Choudhari, Chairman, Ajmer Zila Dugdh Utpadak Sahakari Sangh Ltd., Shri. Devendra Shah, Chairman, Parag Milk Foods, Shri. Arun Narke, Vice President, IDA, Shri. Arun Patil, Chairman, IDA (WZ), Dr. J. V. Parekh, Dr. R. D. Kokane, Shri. Madhav Patgaonkar, Shri. Rajesh Lele, Shri. K. Shyju and Dr. Shveta Patwardhan and many others were present.

After offering floral tributes Mr. Arie Veldhuizen, louded the extra ordinary work carried out by Dr. V. Kurien which made India world’s largest milk producer. Shri. Arun Narke & Shri. Arun Dongale expressed their gratitude to Dr. Kurien on behalf of the Milk Producers of Kolhapur district. They recounted Dr. Kurien’s guidance and help to the Gokul Dairy during early days. Shri. Subhash Mandge narrated on the visit of Dr. Kurien to tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh, which showed his commitment towards the welfare of tribals thru dairying. Shri. Arun Patil, adored the leadership qualities, vision, organizational building capacity and motivation by Dr. Kurien, while implementing the world’s most successful dairy development program, Operation Flood.

After the floral and oral tributes to Dr. Kurien all present stood in silence for two minutes and prayed for the peace to departed soul

IDA ( West Zone) organizes National Seminar on “Cheese – future milk product of India”

Indian Dairy Association (West Zone) organized a National Seminar on “Cheese – future milk product of India” on 12th September 2012 at Mumbai. Shri. Subhash Mandge, Chairman, Madhya Pradesh Sahakari Dugdh Mahasangh inaugurated the seminar. Shri. Kokul The delegates from all over India participated in the seminar.

Hariprasad Manavalan, Sealed Air, Dr. R.D.Kokane, BVC., Mr. Siegersma Gerbrand, Tetra Pak CPS ( Cheese and Powder System), Netherland, Shri. Mani, Kondai Cheese, Shri. Shirish Upadhyay, Go Cheese and Ms. Dingle K. Simon, Repute Engineers presented the papers.

The seminar provided an all round information about Cheese, its types, manufacturing processes, quality aspects, equipment for manufacturing and packing etc. M/s. Repute Engineers, Pune and Milkylab, Italy Sponsored the seminar.
